Syria: Al-Jaafari Calls Upon All Sides to Cooperate with Brahimi

Dr. Bashar al-Jaafari, Syria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, on Tuesday called upon all Arab, regional and international sides which have influence over the armed terrorist groups, particularly those that refused to receive former UN envoy Kofi Annan, to cooperate  with the UN envoy Lakhdar Brahimi.

In a speech during a session of the UN General Assembly, al-Jaafari stressed that Annan’s resignation shouldn’t lead to dismissing the six-point plan.

“From the beginning, Syria has responded to the popular reform demands and dealt positively with all
initiatives that aimed at solving the internal crisis peacefully and politically, including the six-points plan.

Unfortunately some sides saw that only one or half a point is worth implementing and neglected the other points,” al-Jaafari said.

He added that Syria cooperated with the United Nations Supervision Mission in Syria (UNSMIS) and with Major General Robert Mood and provided all facilitations, adding that it is clear to all sides now that Syria was honest when it said that there are armed terrorists groups committing terrorist acts
and funded by Arab, regional and international countries.

Al-Jaafri stressed that “Despite the fact that the escalation of sabotage acts is a challenge to any government- especially if these acts were accompanied by imposing unprecedented sanctions against Syria- the Syrian government is aware of its responsibilities and duties towards its people.”

Al-Jaafari added that the Syrian government is exerting all efforts to rehabilitate the infrastructure and service institutions, providing medical and financial aid and coordinating  national public and private efforts to meet the needs of the citizens who were affected by the current events.

Syria’s representative stressed Syria’s readiness to cooperate with all honest efforts that aim at providing aid to the Syrians for pure humanitarian purposes, adding that the Syrians have never been in need for aid before the flagrant external interference in their affairs.

He added that the external interference aims at destroying the infrastructure in Syria and undermining the economic and social achievements made by the Syrian people throughout decades.

”I call upon all Syrians to take part in rebuilding what has been destroyed due to the current crisis and building the state of law that dictates rights and duties,” al-Jaafari said, adding that the solution in Syria cannot be but purely Syrian through a Syrian political process that fulfills the aspirations of all through comprehensive national dialogue.

Al-Jaafari added that Syria is fully committed to the mission of Lakhdar Brahimi for ending violence and finding a political solution to the Syrian crisis according to Annan’s six-point plan.

In reply to statements by the representative of the Israeli entity, al-Jaafari said that instability in the region, wars and the culture of terrorism have one title that is the Israeli terrorism that has smitten wide sections in the region with the scourge of Zionist extremism; a scourge, he said, that is not an outgrowth of the region’s cultures and civilization.

Al-Jaafari added ”The Israeli representative has got himself in a bind having quoted the British politician Churchill that understanding the past leads to a better understanding of the future, which is, to a point, accurate, because this saying must have led the Israeli representative to quoting the content of Balfour Declaration, also a British politician who played a role in implanting the Zionist entity in Palestine.”

”Looking to the past help us envision the reality of the Israeli terrorism, which has figured on the agenda of this international organization for decades,” said al-Jaafari.

Al-Jafari added “The Israeli representative gave, illusively, the impression that he loves the Syrian people and is sorry for their sufferings, forgetting that Israel has been occupying the Syrian Golan since 1967 and practices all forms of torture against the Syrian citizens there.”

He said “There are, now, in Syria half a million displaced citizens who are waiting to return to their towns and villages in Golan based on the resolutions of this international organization No. /242/, /338/ and /497/ and hundreds of resolutions issued by the UN General Assembly.

He added that “Instead of complying with this ‘arsenal’ of international resolutions that call for Israel’s withdrawal from the occupied Syrian Golan, the successive Israeli governments have ignored the international law and rejected to be engaged in the peace process supported by all the member states of the Security Council.”

For his part, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said “Solving the crisis in Syrian cannot be through violence, but through dialogue,” calling all the sides to support Brahimi mission.

“All sides should offer a joint ground to resolve the crisis in Syria peacefully. Future cannot be built by violence, but through a social contract determined by the Syrians”, Ki-moon added.

For his part, UN Envoy to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi said “The future of Syria is built by its people
not by any other side.”

Meanwhile, Iran’s Representative to the UN welcomed the appointment of Brahimi as a new UN envoy to Syria, expressing his country’s readiness to cooperate with Brahimi to reach a solution for the crisis in Syria.
